Maltnation 4.3

Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old begins not with the roar of a peated fire, but with the quiet contemplation of a coastline on a cool morning. From the glass, a fresh, maritime breeze carries the subtle scent of sea spray and damp earth, quickly joined by the warm, sweet aromas of a Christmas kitchen—notes of dried fruit, cinnamon-poached apples, and a hint of chocolate orange revealing the tale of its time in two different casks. The story deepens on the palate, where a buttery, syrupy texture carries an intricate plot. A nutty, sherried quality leads the way, but a vibrant burst of tropical fruit and a distinct, savory coastal tang provide a counterbalance, creating a complex, evolving narrative where sweet and salty notes dance in elegant harmony. As the final chapters of the story unfold, the whisky offers a long and resonant conclusion. The finish lingers with the comforting warmth of mochaccino and the rich spice of a Christmas cake, punctuated by the faint echo of the sea's salt-laden air. It is a truly cohesive and satisfying end, one that ties every element of the journey together, from the quiet shores of Islay to the bold influence of the sherry casks. This is a dram for both the casual admirer and the dedicated aficionado—a liquid storyteller that reveals more of its quiet, layered personality with every passing moment in the glass.

RDGYE 4.0

Bunnahabhain 12 is a whisky that reveals itself gradually. What might seem initially like a lighter, sherried dram quickly proves to be far more intricate and rewarding upon closer inspection. Once the palate adjusts and becomes comfortable with its higher ABV and dry, structured bitterness, the layers begin to emerge: rich malt, savoury coastal hints, flashes of dark fruit, and a mature, woody spice that feels both rounded and confident. Unlike many Islay malts, there’s no heavy smoke or medicinal iodine to hide behind here—this is a whisky built on balance, texture, and quiet depth. It’s a dram that doesn’t shout for attention but earns respect over time. In that sense, it’s ideal for the seasoned drinker who has developed an appreciation for subtleties—particularly those who enjoy the richness of sherry casks without overwhelming sweetness. With repeated tastings, Bunnahabhain 12 becomes increasingly difficult to overlook. It may not be the boldest or most extroverted whisky in your cabinet, but it might be one of the most complete.

12 yo 46.3% No chill-filtered No colored Ex-bourbon & ex-sherry casks Nose: It evokes the essence of a cold, century-old chimney and wet wood, paired with a light smoke—not peaty, yet unmistakably Islay. A bit of mustiness. The presence of sherry and dry fruits adds to its complexity, eventually unfolding into notes similar to Glendronach 12. Palate: easy going with no harsh bite, featuring a light spiciness and an oily texture that finishes dry, highlighted by hints of orange zest. Finish: is pleasantly dry, with a vanilla sweetness that lingers. Overall, this whisky offers a very nice experience—tasty, easygoing, balanced, and quite complex, especially when considering its value for a 12-year-old expression without added color or filtration. It far surpasses the Bunnahabhain Stiùireadair I've tried before. I would purchase it again.

Nose - I get saltyness at first. Briney and medicinal, kind of like iodine and bandaid. It reminds me of cold foggy weather. Hidden behind are subtle sweet notes. I smell raisins, dates, apples, oranges etc. Has a little bit of freshness as well. Tongue - I immediately get notes of dates, raisins, grapes and molasses. The saltiness and medicinal quality show up as I swirl it around. The aftertaste is again rasinish. It goes down very easy. Hints of black pepper and spicyness come through. Finish is short. I wish the finish was longer. A very delightful regular sipper. A 7 out of 10 for me.

Nose: some slight nuttiness, salt Air, some dark Sherry notes, slightly earthy and a bit sweet. Cinnamon, light black pepper, mild orchard fruit. Palate: smooth, sweet, and clean. Honey, cinnamon, warm baking spices and fresh bread. Warm, sweet oak and some mild vanilla cream. Dark candied cherry, a spicy and earthy sherry. Dried fig. An undergirding malt sweetness to balance. Salinity comes out as it transitions to the finish. Finish: tannic, mildly phenolic, warming and drying. Hints of berry.
