About this bottle

Chopin Potato Vodka was first launched in 1992 and was first introduced to the US in 1997. This family-owned brand produces single ingredient vodkas with no flavored vodkas in their portfolio. Their 100% potato vodka is made mostly from potatoes sourced within 25 miles of the distillery, some of which they grow themselves. They are cooked whole with their skins prior to fermentation. The vodka is distilled in a copper column-still. Bottled at 40% ABV.

Rating: 15/23 I've been wanting to try this for a while. Chopin's wheat vodka is great and its rye is good too. This is my first potato vodka and it's from a brand with a strong track record, so I'm pretty excited. N: Earthy for sure, but not quite how I'd expected. It's a bit sour with some saltiness and mildly sweaty socks. Odd, but not exactly bad. P: Whoa! This is a lot sweeter than I expected! I'm getting sugar water. It has the same earthy, funky socks character that the nose has. And it's also really spicy! I'd expected the rye to be the spiciest of the Chopin offerings, but the way that this lacks the rye's low burn accentuates its high prickles. Somehow, this avoids tasting awful and it's instead in the intriguing range. I can't quite decide whether there's sulphur flavor in here or not, which I guess means that it isn't a problem. Again, intriguing. There's a little tartness here, but really not much. It isn't as extreme as I feared from the nose. Coming back the next day, the funky weird flavors are still funky, but less objectionable. I'm digging the funk now. It is a bit spicier than I'd like and a bit thinner as well though. The rich, earthy funk is nice though. F: The more pungent elements ease up here and the spice relaxes, leaving slightly chocolatey earthiness with mild prickling, sweet water, and just a hint of that funky sweaty sock character. - Conclusion - This is a weird one and I'm good with that. It's very competitive with Chopin Rye, but certainly isn't on the level of Chopin Wheat (17/23) unless you're really into that funk. I'm thinking a 14 or 15. Ocean (16/23) beats this as well, but not by a huge margin. I think this is closest to Chopin Rye (15/23) though. A 15 it is.

DraconiaDream 4.0

Sticks to the glass like a heavy tannin wine. Light smell/taste of potato, but still very clean. Doesn't have that rubbing alcohol vibe. Super smooth with only a slight burn. Maybe a single ice cube to sinch it straight. Fantastic with OJ.

AnarchoViking 4.8

Unbelievably phenomenal vodka. Fantastic. So drinkable with no harshness, sipping is very enjoyable. No harsh aftertaste. It’s truly a neutral vodka experience, with a full mouthfeel and a bit of sweetness.

ERO 4.5

A “high-end” classic-style Vodka, full-bodied and creamy as properly described, very smooth with a light touch of sweetness and delicate flavors, sippable indeed, better than many “luxury“ brands.

Auxilia 3.5

This vodka has a faint fresh herbal aroma and a clean neutral taste with a peppery, spicy, warming finish. It’s really quite pleasant; it reminds me of rye with all of the corny frills removed.

Gator Epp 3.3

Nose evokes wet potting soil, with a subtle minerality. Similarly earthy palate, with a very oily mouthfeel and a touch of pepper. Impressively smooth finish. 3.25/5.00 – Quite Good (neat)
