About this bottle

The latest special edition Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. release is Seasoned Wood, the 8th in the series. It's a wheated bourbon and it's also a bonded whiskey, bottled at 100 proof. The barrels used underwent multiple seasoning processes; some made with staves seasoned outdoors for either 6 or 12 months, others made with staves bathed in a heated, enzyme-rich water solution.

Got a sample of this in a crazy trade where we both gave up a lot. Nose: super sweet, red apples, slight nuttiness, vanilla, brown sugar, toffee, definitely a familiar nose of buffalo trace - like one I've smelled before, but more complex and sweeter. There's also a nose burn with this one. I think I'm getting some cherry jolly rancher on the nose too. Actually, with the spice, I'd probably say more of a cherry menthol Palate: oh wow, why did I swallow that. that was real tasty and kept changing. ohhh yum. Definitely some spice. Cherry, definitely a burn to it, pretty oaky, vanilla. Finish: kind of simple / disappointing after that first taste. Pretty light and short. I don't think I've had this happen before, but the finish is creamy. It's not oily, it's not dry, but it's creamy. 78 - Sure I'll take some. This smells like a wheater, but tastes kind of medicinal. It's tasty, but not worth anywhere close to the secondary prices. I'd put this among more of the unique whiskey I've had, which is cool to try something different, but wasn't my favorite. I think this would be more fun to sip around a fire with friends as you try to dissect the notes, but find you're unable to really pinpoint anything.

This review was transferred over from the Barreled App: I stumbled across this gem at Monk's BBQ & Bourbon in northern VA yesterday and was extremely excited to get a taste. This might've had the biggest, in your face wood profile I've ever tasted in any whiskey. The initial burst was borderline overpowering on the tongue, but after a bit of a "chew" it really opened up- big oak char finishing with a punch from the rye. It finished hard as I suspect it should. It's not something I'd want to drink often, but I'm incredibly happy I got to try it once. Good good stuff. Cheers.

Great pour at a friend’s house. Had that great buffalo trace fruit note to it and wonderful amount of bite and flavor on the palate. Didn’t spend too much time dissecting it but it was really nice. Glad to have had the chance to enjoy it though I didn’t notice any obvious effects of the seasoned wood. Tasted like a solid 100 proof Weller pick or Old Rip frankly.

I sometimes wonder about write-ups like this. This is the first whiskey I've ever had that upon first sipping smell & sipping had the distinct flavor of dark fruits. Plum wine... Pomegranates resonate throughout. Influencing the nose, palate and swallow. Smooth throughout, it does benefit from a splash of water.

The nose has molasses, caramel, vanilla, oak and a slight astringent spiciness that all balances each other quite well. Sweet and creamy notes of molasses, vanilla, and butterscotch follow with subtle baking spices. The finish is medium to long with fading butterscotch and vanilla, with cinnamon in the background.

Held off on trying this since people told me its clovey. Not getting any of that. This is some serious good stuff. Nose you can smell the sweet notes with a hint of spice. Taste is more sweetness vanilla, caramel, cherry toasty goodness and spice. Bad news cant find a bottle of this either......
