About this bottle

Compass Box is a younger company dedicated to mastering blended whiskies, but successful enough in 2013 to be able to celebrate their 10th anniversary of the release for one of their most famous whiskies, known on first release as simply “Monster”. For the occasion the label has been revisited for a more colorful visual. The blend itself is made only of malts from Islay and Clynelish in the Highlands, so this is a blended malt (formerly known as vatted malt) rather than just a blended whisky.

The Peat Monster 10th Anniversary is truly a monster, a peat monster. Compass Box does such an amazing job with their blends and this is just another one to add to that collection. Nose: Peat, briny, malty, flowery, cake, and vanilla Palate: Peat, salt, flowery, oily, malty, smooth, vanilla sweet, peaches, and slight stone fruits Finish: Malty, salty, peat, flowery, vanilla, and light fruits This is bottle shows peak flavors you would expect out of an Islay/peat whisky. First thing you notice is the clear color of this whisky, making it stand out in a realm of peat whiskies. On the palate it is as if someone had taken a salt cube and threw it onto the barbecue. A wall of peat smoke and salt, but beyond that is the beautiful, flowery and fruitfulness. The finish lingers on as your tongue is coated in the salt, and your mouth waters for the next sip.

I really enjoy this dram, but I have so much peated stuff on my bar right now that I don't think I'll be picking a bottle of this up for a while. I know this is a blend of Caol Ila and Laphroaig, but I would swear that it is Ardbeg and Laphroaig. Nose: Earthy peat, citrus, honey, vanilla, ash Palate: Peat, honey, lemon, orange, vanilla, very vegetal. Finish: Medium long with a nice ashy finish like with a cigar Mouthfeel: This is where this whisky stands out from the other peated stuff I've had (with exception to Lore). It's creamy and slightly oily. It feels like it's the perfect ABV and has almost no astringency.

Complex mixture of flavors. The smoke and the peat envelopes the nose. It's a campfire in a glass. On the tongue there is a sweetness with heat. Cinnamon and orange peel. Oddly reminscent of barbecue

Bacon smoked over a campfire on the nose Texas smoked brisket on the palate with a rich oily black pepper spice Wet campfire, hot mushroom broth and a rich oily warmth on the finish

I expected far.more.gicen the rating. The smokiness is on the top of the tongue with a mellow short finish. Scent is very medicinal and not peaty. Color is very VERY light gold
