About this bottle

Based in Hye, Texas, Garrison Brothers is all about repping the Lone Star State. They utilize Texas-grown "#1 Panhandle White" corn for their bourbon, while incorporating soft red winter wheat and barley into the mash bill. Each bottle is meticulously labeled to showcase as much detail as possible. Here, Dallam County Farms provided the corn from a 2011 harvest, leading to a 2012 distillation period and three year aging process in the hot Texas sun.

There is obvious attention to detail with my bottle, vintage 2015. The cork is sealed with a heavy wax dip (like on Makers Mark, only this is black), the pull string is a strip of rawhide leather, the corn in the mash is Panhandle White grown in Dallam County and harvested in 2011, distilling was in 2012, bottled in 2015, this is bottle No. 32879, and in is signed by the the Garrison brothers. Almost forgot, there is a Texas lone star stamped in the wax atop the cork. This 94 proof elixir pours a beautiful dark amber in the glass. The nose is a mixture of corn sweetness, bread dough, oak spice, and an overall floral note. (The nose reminds me of the nose of Sazerac rye, though there is no rye in this.) In the mouth the corn sweetness, the fresh bread dough, and the oak spice are all on display in a well balanced dance of flavors. It is as smooth and easy going as a 80-86 proof whiskey. The Texas heat of their locale west of Austin has really worked on the barrels, this comes across more like a six year old bourbon rather than a three. A few drops of water doesn't seem to open up any other different flavor notes and seems to diminish the intensity of the flavors, so I don't recommend adding water.

Nose:corn and slight brown sugar are expressed. Second smell: thanks to comments...bananas. Most evident corn followed by banana. Palate: Sweet with slight bite, cornmeal and vanilla exert themselves. Finish: smooth as molasses and we'll rounded, lingering cornmeal makes me picture Texas Cornfields and sunshine. Chainsaw Massacre not included.

Just did a flight picked by the bartender. Angels Envy, Woodford, Woodford Double Oaked, and this one. This was the clear loser. Not even close to being a a $30 dollar bottle. People pay 80 for this? Just burn with no character. I'd probably pick this over Devil's Cut if they were both 20 bucks. Let me know when that happens.

i have had a few glasses after a visit to the distillery, which is beautiful, however, the whiskey produced in hye is not of top quality. at $80+ a bottle I expectantly more complex and flavorful whiskey. this bottle offers spice and smoke, not much else. at this price point, you can buy 2 bottles of 10 year old single malt

9/23/16 Grape & Grain Liquors, Kerrville, TX $76.99 Love seeing an offering from Texas with promise, but this one is young and far from being worth the price for the taste. Pay for the experience and colectibility now and the flavors will come.

I got the 2019. Odd taste (almost foul) at first. Then sweet caramel which helped. This will probably get better in time. There are many other whiskeys (Texas ones at that) I’d buy up to this price point of $80+ before I’d get this again
