Edited: 5/08/2024 As always, my notes are taken drinking neat. This is what I like to call a soft whiskey. Not just from the proof, which does not always tell the same story ... but with all the characteristics needed such as Mouthfeel (smooth, thin & light), barely any heat, subtle finish. No matter the size of sip, it dramatically improves with a little air intake and swish. It's a candy in liquid form, allowing for longer sessions of relaxation without major drama. So used to the taste of Black Jack as a mixer, this was a very pleasant surprise. Normally the Black would go in our Christmas Punch and/or Egg Nog every year but thankfully decided to switch to this modest upgrade. Aside from neat, I like it in Old Fashioneds and other Bourbon drinks and will even use it for the "color" in my go-to Bar/Restaurant judging drink, the Long Island Iced Tea. $36 or so in PA. 1.75L is $65 here which makes for nearly $20 in savings when factoring in the extra .25L. Complete no-brainer for a very decent sipper and mixer without the traditional Old No. 7 taste. Bottle looks great too LOL!
About this bottle
Gentleman Jack was first introduced in 1988 and after tweaking the recipe slightly, reintroduced in 1990. The difference between it and Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 is a second pass through the sugar maple charcoal filter after its maturation in new, charred oak barrels. Gentleman Jack is bottled at 40% ABV.

Review #14 - Whisk(e)y #10 Nose - light, with dominant notes of vanilla, honey and some subtle caramel I believe, with oak and some banana as well. Palate - notes of vanilla, some caramel, light spice, some oaky woodiness, maybe honey, and banana again. It is smooth, simple, light, soft, nothing special, but pleasant to drink. Finish - short, maybe medium length, with notes of vanilla and a touch of spice. I do recommend it, it is a very smooth, pleasant drink for under 30 euros...and significantly better than the Jack Daniels no.7, although it might not step up to the Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select in terms of complexity and depth as far as I recall. Rating System: 5.0 - Perfect 4.5 - Exceptional 4.0 - Very Good 3.5 - Good 3.0 - Decent 2.5 - Average 2.0 - Below Average 1.5 - Barely Drinkable 1.0 - Undrinkable 0.5 - JB
The good side of this first: I've been obsessed with banana bread notes in whiskeys lately. So, I had to try this. From that perspective, it has a subtle scent of banana bread on the nose and palate as well. However, what really makes me sink the rating is that it was TOO smooth. I do like to have at least a slight bite in my whisk(e)y. The smoothness factor of Gentleman Jack reminded me of my college days when I would go for a Mike's Hard Lemonade. I kept on sipping because it was so smooth, and I didn't feel the alcohol getting to me until I suddenly had a bit of a buzz going on. To me, this is not at all an upgrade from Old No. 7, but quite inferior to it in my view.
Such a sweet, sweet whiskey. Obviously, the double mellowing works really well, because I am not a fan of the old 7, but I like this one. The nose is like your homemade mommy desert, but with much, much brown sugar, baking spices, banana and a touch of coconut. On the palate it repeats the nose, although you can now feel the baking spices more with a little peppery finish. The brown sugar remains strong though. Perfect for deserts and meat with sweet, mustard marinate.
Jack Daniels Gentleman Jack is too much of a gentleman being lighter in taste than the original Jack Daniels #7. The nose is charred oak ,sweet maple, and banana pudding. The entry is smooth with flavors of charred oak, sweet maple, and banana pudding. There is a finish of pipe tobacco and baking spice.Gentleman Jack is too sweet and tastes like a water down Jack Daniels #7.
Still carries Old No.7's astringent character that I found absolutely vile when I tasted it, just more muted and veiled with a woodier baseline and hints of red fruits, cherry and sherry or portwine in both nose and flavor. The acidity however sort of resurfaces with coke, still making for an entirely mixed overall impression.
