This is my first Glenallachie bottle. I was led to start with this one before getting the 15 which is very affordable for a 15. And I’m very glad I got this one. Very good quality for a 12 year old. The nose is very rich and the palate is creamy, oily and fulfilling. On the nose: there’s a mocha feeling, coffee notes and some chocolate behind. Then I got a little of the sweet ethanol and tobacco. There’s also dry fruits like raisins. Its very complex. On the palate: It’s a little hot with spice feeling, but not so spicy. It goes a little to dry fruits and tobacco, but still sweet. Water added On the nose: Charred oak and herbal, grassy, vanilla and tobacco. The complexity on the nose reduces. On the palate: It opened up really well. More sweetness, still tobacco notes, vanilla, less heat, longer finish. Mildly nutty in the end, like a walnut covered in sugar. I loved this dram! It’s very complex on the nose ans it opens up beautifully on the palate after some water. That’s a keeper for sure! I’ll have to keep a bottle ready when this one ends. Slainte Mha!
About this bottle
Prior to 2017, when the distillery was acquired by a consortium led by master distiller Billy Walker, GlenAllachie was rarely seen as a single malt whisky. The much anticipated core range of the GlenAllachie distillery from Speyside was finally launched in July 2018. This 12 Year expression features whisky matured in Pedro Ximénez sherry, oloroso sherry, and virgin oak casks.

NEAT NOSE - Beautiful bouquet of a nose. LOADS of dried fruit. There’s figs, blueberries, raisins, vanilla, and honey. Very complex. PALATE - On the front of the palate, theres a bit of spiciness that comes across but that is quickly washed away with the sweetness of the dried fruit, vanilla, and honey. The mouthfeel is like olive oil that’s been watered down. It doesn’t exactly coat the palate but it does have a slightly silky mouthfeel. FINISH - There is none. It vanishes immediately which is a huge letdown. Even more, it dries out the palate similar to a dry red wine. I hope the 15 yr. improves upon this. BUY? - Absolutely. It’s a great representation of a quality sherried scotch at a good price. BUY AGAIN? - Yes, but I need to compare it against others in the same category such as Glendronach, Glenfarclas, etc. Regardless of how a blind comes out with them, I do see myself purchasing this again. **I would have rated this higher if it wasn’t for the nonexistent and drying finish. Regardless, still a good dram.
The nose is cherry orange marmalade, licorice, raisin, vanilla, cinnamon. Could almost pass as a finished bourbon on the nose. The palate shows malt and honey, covered in berry orange raisin vanilla. Overall, the fruit is pretty prominent. Some dark chocolate and spice comes on toward the finish. A little bitter, but I don’t think overly so - provides a nice balance to the fruit-forward flavors. I think this is a worthy competitor to Glendronach 12, and in fact I think I prefer this one. It’s got a slightly higher proof, and the fresh fruitiness is more to my liking.
A complex, Single Malt Scotch Whisky by the GlenAllachie Distillery in Speyside, Scotland matured in Pedro Ximénez, Oloroso & virgin oak casks for 12 years. It has an aromatic birth with notes of fried banana, flowers, almonds, cola cubes, freshly cut oak, vanilla, butterscotch & cocoa; while a fruity life adds notes of stem ginger, sultana, bananas foster, almond paste, oily barley & buttery vanilla; that led to a long & creamy death with hints of milk chocolate, honey & almonds. Dark colour like brandy. My first thought was if this was dyed in any way. On the nose, theres very strong odour iniitaly of vanilla but definitely candy and honey. You can already taste the sweetness on the nose itself. Alcohol seems to be quite strong as well already. On the pallette comes similar very strong notes. A full bodied dram indeed wtih strong alcohol spiciness and ethanol coupled with strong dried fruits such as raisins. Quite a long finish of similar sweet caramelly dried fruits.
Nose - a mellow but complex mix of fruits, baking spices. Has a sherry forward nose. Sweet smelling and pleasant! A soft nose, with mild spicyness. Tongue -sweet and mildly spicy! A mouthful of christmas cake in liquid form. Notes of apricots, rum soaked raisins, cinnamon, star anise and licoriche flavors. Leaves a fresh feel in the mouth. Has an oily mouth feel but the finish is too short. If the finish was long, this would be a really highly rated scotch in my books.
