About this bottle

The Solera Reserve expression from Glenfiddich is quite unique. First off, it is aged in three different types of vessels: ex bourbon, ex-sherry, and new virgin American oak. After 15 years, the whisky is then vatted into a Solera tun, an Oregon pine container which always keeps at least 50% of previous marriages in it. Note: Glenfiddich updated the packaging for this product and named it Glenfiddich Our Solera Fifteen.

Glennfiddich 15 Tasting Methodology: Neat in a Canadian Glencarin glass. Rested 10 minutes. Nose: yellow apple, ripe pear. Subtle sherry tone (this is not a sherry bomb) Mouthfeel: bitter but not astringent. No tannin (very mellowed out) Palate: bitter wormwood, leather, wisp of smoke Finish: a tinge of bitterness. Otherwise none it is very smooth Rating: 8/10 - it’s nice but I prefer a whiskey with more expressive character (Laphroaig). Price paid: $80 Value rating: 10/10 the equivalent cognac cost $200+ Overall Notes: bitter, mellowed fruity notes. It is very smooth but I prefer something with more character. This would be an excellent gift to introduce whisky a cognac lover - this has all the characteristics of higher end XO cognac. This is the whisky version of a $300 cognac . Would I get again? It’s interesting and I would definitely keep this style on hand. Edit: this is a wonderful neat sipper. For only $80.

This one has a powerfully fruity nose. Smells of slightly old raspberries mixed in with a little citrus zest. The taste carries with it sweet honey and has a bit of a malty mouthfeel that, when mixed with the honey, reminds me of honey nut cheerios a bit. As the taste goes down and blossoms into the finish you catch something just a bit tannic and slightly musty, like an old leather jacket. When the taste is long done, there's a wisp of peat smoke that dances off the tip of your tongue, almost unnoticeable. I had to take a second drink to confirm its presence. This is just fine for what is essentially a wine cask selection. It isn't too fruit forward on the taste, despite what the nose tells you.

I like the nose on this bottle. It is rich and fruity for me. I can pick up the Sherry casks. The palette is soft with a honey-like sweetness. I did pick up some subtle baking spice with some nutmeg. At the finish, I got black tea notes. But it wasn't bitter; the honey sweetness carried forward, providing a balanced finish. The finish lingered longer than I expected. I enjoyed GF15. I love the GF branding. The shape of the bottle is great. It is a little expensive, coming in at 120 CAD in my neck of the woods. Overall, It is a balanced whisky from start to finish. 7.75/10

The smell is amazingly fresh, apple, fig, sweetness like running in a fresh garden. Couldnt enjoy the taste when strait on hot day, too much alcoholic fumes and burning undefined tatse. With one ice cube, the burn turns down a bit but still looking for the sweetness I previously discovered with the nose. Taste slightly bitter, some peat is there when left on toung for longer time. It is nice, in between characte not defenitive, smells sweet but taste bitter and somewhat peaty, not too bitter though. The after taste is not that pleasent. I like glenfiddich, but this one is πŸ˜•

AnttiRG 4.5

A rich, blended whisky aged in oak, sherry & bourbon casks before being crafted, using the Solera method from Speyside, Scotland. It has a rich birth with notes of vanilla, honey, heather & dark berry; while life is silky & full-bodied adding notes of sherry oak & cinnamon; that led to a long & delicate death with notes of white chocolate & apple. December 2017 / May / August 2018 / August 2022
