Nose - Intense raisin/prunes, dark soy, dark berries Taste - Dark raisins/prunes, blackberries, blueberries, dark soy, dark chocolate, dark cherries Finish - Wet oak, dark berries, raisins, dark cherry juice, dark soy Score - 86/100 Final Thoughts - Nose on this one felt a bit more balanced, but still a bit one dimensional. Nice addition of blackberries and blueberries on the palate, but still felt like I was drinking a fortified sherry that had a tiny bit of dark soy added to it. It wasn't off putting by any means, but just felt a bit one and done. About this bottle
Hakata Whisky is distilled and matured at the Hikari Distillery (est. 1912) in Fukuoka, Japan. The whisky is made with 100% barley, part of which is fermented with koji, a type of mold typically used in shochu production. Sherry casks were used for maturation with the barrels housed in traditional-style warehouse. However, a few casks were matured in open-air warehouses with temperatures fluctuating from 95°F in the summer and 38°F in the winter. Hakata 18 Year is available in the US as of February 2023. Nose: dark dried fruit. Musty. Very earthy sherry. Raisin/craisin and dried cherries. Hint of nuttiness. Musty library oak. Cinnamon. Palate: incredibly sherry heavy, almost tart. Cranberry and cherry. Koji mold/yeast brings a slight funk here. This is sharp, not as syrupy as I expected it to be. Kind of thin, but not necessarily bad. Struggling to find the malt notes. Hints of oak and barrel notes come as it transitions to the finish along with slight caramel. Finish: oak and cinnamon come out here, a tiny hint of caramel, some phenols.
Very Sherry forward. Sweet with a funky tast. Could be the Koji.
