About this bottle

Released late fall 2018, this 27 year-old Kentucky straight bourbon was distilled at the Old Heaven Hill Springs Distillery prior to a fire which destroyed it in 1996. This bottling consists 41 barrels of bourbon distilled in 1989 and 1990. All but five barrels were aged on the 1st and 2nd floors of the warehouse. Aged a minimum of 27 years in new, charred American oak. When the barrels were vatted together, the barrel proof came to 94.7. Each bottle will come in a custom wooden box with two H's on each side to signify Heaven Hill.

This is a delicious old bourbon that has typical bourbon notes of citrus, chocolate, leather and old dusty oak. It’s a viscous mouthfeel with a nice balance that veers towards a slightly over oaked flavor mid-palate showcasing its age that quickly fades away in the long finish with dusty oak and typical bourbon notes. At a price tag of nearly $2k, it was worth a taste but I’d rather have a Garrison Brothers Cowboy or Lux Row 12 year Double Barrel.

The nose is full of oak and vanilla, warm rye spice, baking spices and sponge cake. The palate is gentle for its age and is chewy as rich oak, vanilla and caramel reach the corners of the mouth. A wave a floral rye spice follows with underlying notes of baking spices. The finish is medium long and leaves you chewing on the whiskey and oak and vanilla stay long in the mouth while rye and caramel fades.

This was excellent- definitely well balanced and not over oaked for the age - the nose was bright, inviting and fruity- the palate Didn’t exactly match the nose but hit me just right- not too sweet and not too spicy, somewhat viscous with a great spice. The finish was clean quick and magical without any tannins or funk. I’m not a big fan of HH, but this was the best bourbon i’v had in a while. 👍🏼

Fortunate to taste at Old Talbott Tavern in Bardstown, KY during amazing 2018 40th bday Bourbon Trail Experience. Tasting it at Old Talbott with CSM was amazing capstone to Spirits & Spirit day on the Trail. The bar had only gotten it less than a week ago. Probably won’t ever see it again. Amazing story with the ‘96 fire. Complex, perfume, but to be honest might be slightly over-Oaked.

The quality of this bourbon does not meet the price it demands. Easy drinking. Nose is pleasant. Smells like a rackhouse. Palate is pretty damn oaky. Little bit of sweetness. Not a lot other than the light sweetness for taste. It isn't over oaked as many other old bourbons are, but it is extremely 1 dimensional. If you haven't had prefire heaven hill give this a shot.
