A classic - ye ol’ no 7, a staple of all whiskey drinkers cabinets. But for my taste.. I find it quite sharp and unrefined. The No 7 would be a drink I will have if given me but not one I would actively choose. I appreciate its relevance and classic taste along with its strengths as mixing drink as it makes a good base. But as a neat drink, which is how I like my whiskey, it is middle of the road. For the notes I find it smells woody teetering onto a slightly burnt wood smell which certainly lends to the fact of the fire aged barrels used in the manufacturing process. As for taste I get a hint of smokiness but the rest is unremarkable, the taste doesn’t stay on the palate for long and doesn’t overstay its welcome. For the mouth feel, as previously stated how its sharp but not too much, a bit more then I would like but it goes down. The No 7 wouldn’t be one I spend long savouring due it its unremarkable taste and lack of complexity but it is inoffensive. Overall Jack Daniel’s No 7 is a middle of the road inoffensive bourbon, a classic of its age. Although I mark it middle of the road for my own personal taste, I appreciate its inoffensive and clean flavour profile as a good base to be built upon with other drinks to make what could be a more complex and well-rounded flavour experience, But on its own it just misses the mark for me.
About this bottle
Old No. 7 (sometimes referred to as Black Label or just Jack) is made from a mash bill of 80% corn, 12% barley, and 8% rye. Limestone-filtered water and a starter mash (aka sour mash) from previous batches are added for fermentation to allow for consistency. After a six-day fermentation, the mash is distilled to 140 proof. The new-make whiskey is then charcoal-mellowed through 10 feet of maple charcoal prior to aging. Aged at least four years in new, charred American oak barrels which the distillery makes itself.

I've been working my way through a roster of inexpensive whiskeys that have banana bread notes. So, I picked up a 50 mL bottle of Jack and just opened it up. I get the expected aroma of banana bread on the nose. On the palate, the banana bread is there too along with some ethanol. The finish had a slight bit of a burn but nothing off-putting. In comparing this with Gentleman Jack, Old No. 7 beats its more expensive and twice-filtered sibling by a mile. Gentleman Jack was too smooth for me. Also, the banana bread notes were much more subtle in Gentleman Jack. Old No. 7 isn't quite good enough to be a permanent part of my whiskey stash, but it's good enough for me to buy once in a while. It's good enough for me to order at a restaurant or bar that doesn't have many whiskey options. There are certainly better options out there, but Old No. 7 will do just fine for me.
Review #13 - Whisk(e)y #9 Nose - alcohol, along with notes of vanilla and honey, with subtle hints of oak and very slight banana. Palate - flavours of vanilla, honey and oak, feeling rather dry. Finish - short to short-medium, with sweet aromas, but also some oakiness and light spice. It is several steps above Jim Beam Original in terms of depth and balance, albeit not being the smoothest option. The Gentleman Jack is clearly a class above, although still lacking complexity, which can be found instead, in the Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select. On the nose: I get strong scents of banana and a hint of sweet creamed corn On the palate: Banana Pudding is the primary flavor here, with vanilla and toasted graham cracker The finish: Long and crisp, with mostly the same flavors but with an added hint of tropical fruit that goes well with the banana-forward flavor Overall: I used to not enjoy Jack very much, but perhaps it has grown on me a little more recently. A “safe bet” whiskey that is probably best for mixing, but can be enjoyed on its own if in a pinch
A rich, Tennessee Whiskey made up of 80% corn, 12% rye and 8% malt, then filtered through 10 feet of sugar maple charcoal to produce a mellow, slightly smoky character. It has a rich birth with notes of with notes of caramel, vanilla, & charred wood; while a sweet & clean life adds notes of oak, honey, brown sugar, cinnamon & smoke; that led to a rich & smooth death with notes of maple & a hint of rye.
