Review #311 Glass: Glencairn, rested 15 minutes. Color: Light amber. Nose: Smoky with some subdued fruit notes. Palate: Oily mouthfeel dominated by smoke and salt. Finish: Long length with medium heat. Splash: No new flavors are revealed. Overall: 7.5/10 - Coming off of a dry week due to being on-call 24/7 for work, I was very excited to finally crack this new Lagavulin expression. I am very surprised to find that nobody has yet rated it, so this is the first time that I'm first to review something. I'll try to do it justice. This was a fresh crack that I picked up on Superbowl Sunday but didn't have a chance to open until today. I'm sure the flavors will open up with time, so this is just my initial impression. As I get closer to the bottom of my Glencairn, I'm impressed with the oily mouthfeel and long finish enough to bump it up from 7.5 to 8.5. This is a fine dram that I may rate even higher the next time I try it. The only thing possibly lacking is a sweet(er) finish from sherry barrels, but there are plenty of sherry finished Islays out there. Kudos to Lagavulin for sticking to using ex-bourbon barrels for this release.

About this bottle
Lagavulin 11 Year Sweet Peat is the first new permanent bottling released by the distillery in nine years. The single malt is aged for 11 years in first-fill American oak ex-bourbon casks, with its sweetness derived from the combination of heavily peated malted barley and oak influence rather than any finishing. Bottled at 86 proof, it will be available nationwide beginning February 2026. (SRP $69.99)
