Great Smokey vegetal sweetness with dried dark fruits on the nose. A very slight Sherry smell. Medicinal and peat notes aren't overpowering like an Ardbeg. Wonderful sweet vanilla, leather, and dried fruit (dried apples as well) come through on the pallette initially. Medicinal notes are there but not persistent. Smoke changes to more of a mix of toasty oak and mesquite. Smoke persist in a long oily finish but with a lemon or grapefruit zest and a little zing of spice. I'm a rye and bourbon drinker and this is amazing. Don't expect it to be a winner initially but grows on you after several tastings over weeks. Note: pair with milk chocolate and chopped bacon for a next level experience!
About this bottle
Laphroaig 10 Year Cask Strength is aged in used barrels for 10 years. But unlike the flagship 10 year bottling, this whisky is only barrier filtered, meaning just the large chunks of char are removed leaving the whisky to shine on its own. As it is minimally filtered, adding water or changes in temperature will create a haze in the whisky. Batch 7 was released in early 2015 and was bottled at 56.3% ABV (112.6 proof).

Recently found this dusty, old bottle near a job site in Oceanside, CA. Neck pour. Neat, this is a challenging whiskey to enjoy. Honey, a camphor like note and slight peat on the nose, not much else. Thick, oily and medicinal palate with a slight, smokey, honey note. Finish is long with a semisweet, eucalyptus type note. Hope this gets better with time open. Edit: That didn’t take long. One day open, nice vanilla and lemon notes added to the nose and palate. Upped the score 1/4 point. Edit: 3 months open have tamed the wild beast, mellowing the nose and palate. Bumped another 1/4 point.
Amazing. Currently my favourite peaty whiskey. Was introduced to whiskey by Ardbeg, like many. On the nose: Smokey with a sweet undertone. As it settles becomes more like a burnt caramel. On the palette: after the peaty tasted, notes of a vanilla honey with sea spray.
Add water Nose: campfire, briny, medicine, peat, smoke, seaweed, salt, iodine. Palate: sweetness, honey appears first then the peat and smoke, very intense but mouth watery Finish: long and warm, the sweetness lingers
Nice slow warm burn. Floral aftertaste. Slightly sweet. Just how i like it
Aggressively Smokey, iodine, salt brine. Earthy, bitter.
