About this bottle

Maker's Mark Bourbon is a wheated bourbon made with a mash bill recipe of 70% locally-grown corn, 16% red winter wheat, and 14% malted barley. This recipe was created by Bill Samuels, Sr. who baked bread with different grains to settle on his mash bill rather than trial and error with distillation. His wife, Margie Samuels, is responsible for the shape of the bottle, the signature label, and the red wax topper. Maker's Mark is aged in char #3 new American oak barrels for 6-7 years. It is bottled at 90 proof.

I'm rating this a 3.25 just because realistically there are so many more complex bourbons out there. BUT, if I'm at the airport or a bar, I will 7 times out of 10 order this Maker's Mark unless I see a great deal on a pour I've been wanting to try. I love wheated bourbons, and Maker's is my go to (given that WSR is not always findable). In fact, the Maker's line is hard to beat for value. In any case, good vanilla and oak in this one. If you see me at the airport, I'm probably sipping on this!

Nose feels like old, dusty oakwood with some amount of vanilla sweetness and cereal. Neat flavor also an entirely unmarkable, muddled affair with nothing in particular jumping out, just a general bourbony woodiness, however with a slightly bittersweet aftertaste. The latter impression is also elevated as a slightly bitter woodiness with coke, though soon surpassed by a hint of red fruits with a slight amount of vanilla throughout.

Auxilia 3.3

The nose isn’t super promising; it’s a bit harsh, with only a hint of honey and toast. But I actually think this whisky is more complex than it smells; it’s very spicy, but not unpalatably so, with a short, smoky, sweet-tinged finish. A bit of a firecracker with its predominant pepperiness; if that’s your style, you’ll love it!

AnttiRG 3.0

A bittersweet, bourbon that has an aromatic birth with notes of grains, wood, fruits, herbs & spices; while a rich life adds notes of oak, caramel & vanilla; that led to a bittersweet death of medium length with notes tree fruits, honey, nuts & toffee. May 2017 / July 2022
