Deserves way more than a "50". I can think of several bottles that cost more (old monk is $20) and drink far worse. Made in India, 7 year age statement. N Molasses-dipped weathers original candy. Raisin, ethanol, cherry cough syrup, rich dulce de leche P Brown sugar, toffee, tamarind, root beer spices. Weak and thin but enjoyable. M This is where I dont understand the bad rating--it goes down fantastic! Neat or mixed this badboy was tasty. The ethanol nose is nowhere to be found, and the thinness in the palate translates to a smooth finish. Easily the best rum and cola rum I've tried! Normally I hate them but the internet said it was tailor-made for them, so I made a few. A few turned into a second, then third bottle. It made a perfectly drinkable colada, yet seemed a bit too butterscotch/toffee-forward. Wondering if batch variance is a big thing here? No way the stuff I've been drinking is a 50/100, 80-83 range sounds way more accurate.
About this bottle
Made since 1954, Old Monk rum is India's favorite rum. Despite sharply declining sales in recent years, the brand sold nearly four million cases in 2014. While the rum carries an age statement of seven years, it should be placed firmly in the category of "dark rum" due to the addition of molasses and other flavoring agents.

I have had this Rum in my bar for a while and drink it on occasion and seeing it has been years since it has been reviewed I thought I would give it a shot. This rum is not a fancy drink that you bring out for special occasions and it is not a flavorless white rum that is only good in daiquiris and for people that don't know any better. It falls in-between. I like rum in general because it mixes so well with fruits and juices and this one does not disappoint me at all. I have made a few drinks like the St Croix Rum Fix and using it as a substitute for Cruzan Dark Rum. But the rum does taste syrupy sweet with maple and sugar as the dominant flavor. For the price, it is very hard to beat and it mixes well with all of the fruits I have used so far. However, neat or on the rocks, it is too sweet for my tastes.
It's a flavoured rum with vanilla and sweet flavor (I'm not an expert in alcohol tasting). As a Sri Lankan, for me the taste yes very similar to Rockland Dark Red Rum (it's more likely that Rockland had copied their recipe from this). But Rockland (and most Sri Lankan rum/ gin brands) is much more smoother in terms of the another's of alcohol. Old Munk has that quick kick you usually get from cheaper alcohol (Extra special Arrack) we find here in Sri Lanka.
This rum is not very good. It smells and tastes like rubbing alcohol straight out the bottle. I can't really taste or smell anything else. Maybe vanilla? But it's faint. This is not for the casual drinker. I'm giving 2 stars because it mixes with other sweet things fine. Not for sipping alone for sure.
Dark color. Nose: Vanilla and fruits, sweet and really smooth. The same about taste. Pleasant finish, do not have strong alcohol aftertaste, slightly sweet and smooth.
Acrylic nail tips, gasoline. Bitter orange and almonds. Not even a little sweet. Interesting more than good. I found I kept trying it, but didn't take it home.
