Found a dusty old bottle in Dad's cabinet, probably 25 years since opening. Only a few drams were left at the bottom, so perhaps a fair test: N: sweet wheat bread, acetone T: thin mouthfeel, astringent, light speyside blend notes but hard to get to. peaches, barley, rye bread crust. light smoke. F: too weak to burn, and a punishment is a surprisingly long bitter aftertaste. faint raisins, cloves, apple skins. would never recommend, but etched in memory of an evening with family exploring the liquor cabinet!
About this bottle
The Old Smuggler brand goes back to 1835, when high customs duties in the 18th century drove many opportunists to smuggle contraband throughout the region. This no-age-statement blend of malt whisky and grain whisky is bottled at 40% ABV.

With these bottom shelf whiskeys you are always taking a gamble but this is the ultimate strike out. The initial taste is not bad, I picked up a bit of honey and citrus, but the finish is absolutely horrible and resembles cleaning chemicals. This is the only whiskey ive ever had that literally made me vomit. I dumped the rest of the bottle down the drain and felt glad that I bought it simply so I could save one person from ever trying this complete abomination of a scotch.
Absolutely horrid. While I realize some choose to pick on budget spirits inherently, I have no problem giving kudos and commendations to cheap spirits that deserve. This is not the case. Extremely chemically, superglue and hot, burning sawdust. This actually ruins a cocktail as well. Absolutely steer clear. Spend a few dollars more, get yourself a bottle of Pig’s Nose, Dewar’s or Dimple Pinch and have an infinitely better experience.
Light refreshing smell, smooth initially in the mouth with a pretty warm hit at the bottom that lasts. Others mention a chemical taste, i didnt pick up on that, but im not a fan. Read others reviews after the fact, regretting not checking on it before purchase but i was in a hurry.
Found this in my father-in-law’s alcohol cabinet - it tasted diluted and just poor in general. It gave me the impression it was grabbed from one of the bottom shelves of a nearby supermarket.
Um, yeah. Bought it for the label while on vacation. Not as bad as some of the other reviews here, but not a sipper. Hopefully it doesn't keep me from scuba diving tomorrow...
