I only have limited experience with rums, but of the four dozen or so I have had, this must be one of the most enjoyable to drink neat---have never mixed it. You MUST check out their web site, it is one of the most straight forward and honest ones I have ever seen. For example, they tell you this is a blend of Barbados twin column and pot still molasses rum fermented for 72 hours; and Jamaica molasses rum, fermented tor 2 weeks, and than pot distilled. The Barbados is aged for 1-3 years, and the Jamaican is aged for 10-15 years. Then the two are shipped to France, and then blended together in a Cognac vat for 3-6 months. Then they are bottled for us. The site even clearly states that a sugar dosage of 15g/L is added, as well as up to .1% caramel coloring when needed to maintain consistent batch coloring. Wow! When was the last time you saw that much clarity on a liquor site other than Compass Box? For the tasting, it pours a bright amber neat, the only way I have ever tried it. I consider this a dessert drink because of the sugar dosage, but the sweet level is not overbearing. You know you are drinking rum, but there is not that heavy brown sugar/molasses stereotypical flavor evident at all. There is a slight hint of molasses, golden raisins (Cognac influence?), baked fruit, apricot mixed with banana perhaps, a very slight peppery spice, and a gentle dessert sweetness throughout as I let it roll around in my mouth for 30-45 seconds. I know I have tried only a few dozen of the many hundreds of rums on the market, but this is one of the most pleasurable rums I have experienced just to sit and simply sip neat. As a bonus, it is readily available in the $15-$20n ran
About this bottle
The Original Dark is a blend of Trinidad and Tobago rums selected by Alexandre Gabriel and aged in young American oak bourbon casks. The base rum is aged three to five years and is then blended with a more robust, fully-flavored eight year old rum. This blend is then aged 12 to 18 months in Cognac Ferrand French oak barrels. Note: This product was reformulated in 2015 featuring rums from Barbados & Jamaica. Look for that separate listing.

It smells rich with firework smoke. It is fairly harsh with a lot of spice and a bit more alcohol flavor than I would like, but it isn't bad. That firework taste definitely does come through and it helps to mask the alcohol. Although there is some sweetness, the bitter smoke makes it taste like a man's drink. I actually kind of like the fireworks. There's a lot of vanilla and some sort of dried fruit. The minerality is a bit much, but this is a borderline sippable drink. The flavor is quite abrasive but is also very full. The banana presence is there but is not overwhelming.
They call it funk. It is funky. Might not be a fan favorite out of the gate but, this rum has its place. Like, with a spliff! The cognac hogo punch turns over to heavy brown sugar. Barrel char follows and washes away with vanilla oak, heat.. it's different, cause of the Cognac barrel finish.. but it's cigar worthy tell a buddy, kinda rum! It's French (sweet) Rum..
The planteray is a beautifully crafter rum, the nose is a strong warm light spicy aroma. The first sip that tonches the tip of the tongue is quiet then boom, warm and shocks of leather, light peppery, baking spice, hint of sweet, and a note of a kick of chemical that follows in the end. Definitely an excellent choice for cocktails or neat.
I’m drinking it on the rock, the aroma is very relaxing with the smell of the cask lingering. Then when you first sip you don’t taste anything then BAM a smoky oak kicks in and electrifies your taste buds. Then the after taste starts to linger and you taste a oaky smoked Bourbon
probably one of the best dark tums at its price. it had a mildly smokey start that dives back into pinapples, apricot and honey, mild hogo and molasses. The finish has a mild baking spice and sweetness that makes it an effortless everyday rum.
