This is the third bottle of the four Rabbit Hole standard issues I've tasted. Not a fan of the bottle--awkward, heavy, and over-produced at extra cost that isn't about the juice. It's also the second of three RH bottles that doesnt sit perfectly flat--a tall, heavy, rectangular bottle that rocks on the table makes me nervous. Rye color is golden rosy, medium legs in the glass. Says "matured over three years" in new #3 charred oak barrels. A healthy 47.5% ABV which is perfect for a 95% rye mashbill to sip or mix in a classic cocktail. Oak char, leather, sweet and grassy grain on the nose. A little spice, not overpowering. In the mouth it blows up nicely. Char smoke, tannic, with a little ethanol and astringency. Sweetness shows up arm in arm with spicy rye, pepper, mint, and dry sweetgrass. Blends nicely. Good medium finish where the tingle lingers but so does the sweetness--no dry sour flavors. I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I am given the young age and some of the reviews. More char flavor than many ryes, but also a lot of sweetness from the 5% malted barley. Will revisit this with an ice cube and mixed later.
About this bottle
Rabbit Hole Distilling, founded by Kaveh Zamanian, is located in Louisville, Kentucky. Rabbit Hole uses locally sourced grains and flame-charred barrels from Louisville's Kelvin Cooperage. Their Kentucky Straight Rye has a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley. The rye is distilled and aged for at least 2 years in toasted and charred new American oak (char #3) in Kentucky before being bottled at 47.5% ABV. Note: This product was rebranded as of September 2019 with Boxergrail added to its name. The juice remains the same as the Rabbit Hole Kentucky Straight Rye, only the packaging and name differ.

A- mid tone amber, looks a bit oily S- acetone, pepper, with some smoky tobacco. T- spicy butterscotch. Garden pepper. Peppery rye in the back end. Spice lingers for a long time with some strong wood showing up late.. M- medium O- this one takes a moment to open up. Starts sweet hot, then pepper hot. Then woody hot. The rye spice definitely takes everything over. I enjoy the aftertaste but the ride itself is a bit mangled. It definitely goes through stages on the way out. Fits the Rye bill.
Let sit for about 5 minutes. š: Pale rosy copper, thick legs that stay on the side of the glass; š: Lots of funky notes and a nice spicy accent, mature rye stands out with a little young rye rounding out the nose, cinnamon, some muted baking spices VERY SWEET; š : VERY smooth and creamy at the outset, burnt caramel in the middle and a little bright citrus at the back end; š: Lingers a bit in a good way, no harshness whatsoever, great rye that is very underrated, and deserves a raised glass!
A- pale copper N- apricot, butterscotch, Banana bread, earthy. T- layered. Starts thin and sweet, apple and stonefruit. Middle is a bit of spice, pepper, wood, maybe a tinge of tobacco. Ends with a lingering long finish. Sweet spicy, and wood. The wood flavor is very nice. M- thin to medium O- not as dynamic as I was expecting but the balance between the rye and wood makes for a superb after taste.
Nose: barrel spices, vanilla and light Carmel Palate: sweet up front like vanilla cake. Rolls into a spice cake at the end from the rye spice. Notes of tobacco and touch of cinnamon. This is way better than I figured it be. A good long finish. Overall: this a solid pour. Very tasty. A great mix of spice and sweet with a good finish on it. Iād buy another bottle
pine, rye, vanilla, and light cherry on the nose plus maybe baking spices. Leather and vanilla on the palate The rye hits hard on a medium long finish. The bottle states 3 years age but this sipps like a much younger bottle. For me this falls well short of the price point in terms of flavor and complexity. There are many superior ryes that are more inexpensive
