About this bottle

William McCoy was one of the original rum runners, illegally smuggling rum into the U.S. during Prohibition. Because he did not adulterate his spirits to increase his profit margin as did other bootleggers, “the real McCoy” became a term for authenticity. In 2012, documentary filmmaker Bailey Pryor, having produced a film about McCoy, started The Real McCoy Spirits. All Real McCoy rums are sourced from the highly regarded Foursquare Distillery in Barbados, who also happened to supply William back in the day. A blend of pot and column-still rums. This particular expression is aged for twelve years with no sugar or coloring added.

This is a bourbon mans rum. Dorky way to say if you like bourbon the odds are you will like this. It’s distinctly rum but the mouthfeel, the wood sugars, the color even is more reminiscent of a solid straight bourbon. Oh yeah and the 12 years it spent in bourbon barrels probably helps. Not helps. Strike that. Replace “Helps” with “Hath made it so”. Or “hath rendered it thusly”. Or if those English word abominations I offered are far too course and distasteful, make up your own, sheesh, get off my back. I am so overwhelmed lately by all these strawmen who follow me around critiquing everything I write.

To me it has little smell of funk and bourbon...that and nail polish come to mention it. Flavor is bourbon and dry oak leaves on the finish. Odd, I know but that's what flashed through my head. Sipped quickly it has a smoothness on the tongue and the pepper grows after swallowing. This was disappointing as I expected better from an aged spirit. It's not even good in soda. Rating is based on neat sipping.

Terriblemuse 3.8

Fruit and vanilla on the nose, oak and petroleum on the tongue. A good mouth swirl brings back the vanilla and fruit with a hint of caramel. Down the hatch, the petrol makes a return appearance, with an accompanying burn. Nothing drastic, and all fairly pleasant, though perhaps not as smooth or satisfying as the three year.

barada83 4.3

Nose of overripe pineapple, brown sugar, molasses, vanilla, and baking spices. Some woody notes come late in the pour. Initial taste begins with a punch of molasses, then moves to caramel and spice mid taste. Moderate decay in taste over time that finally yields to a nice vanilla finish.

this is good, probably the driest rum I’ve ever had, but I don’t intend to spend $50+ on a bottle again. maybe upper 30s if I saw it. also the description here says no coloring added but the label on my bottle says it includes added caramel coloring, so. make of that what you will I spose

Zygimantas Valiulis 4.3

Aromas on the nose - slightly medicinal yet sweet, bitter rich chocolate & wood polish and charcoal. On first try mouthfeel is sour espresso, cocao, wood and vanilla. Finish leaves the mouth dry and slightly bitter on the tongue, yet mellow burn on the throat.
