About this bottle

TINCUP is a sourced whiskey from MGP/LDI in Indiana and is comprised of a high-rye mash bill (64% corn, 32% rye, and 4% malted barley). It is aged in new, charred American oak for 4-5 years and is cut with Rocky Mountain water. Named for a once prominent mining town in Colorado, TINCUP tops its bottles with a tin cup for you to drink from as miners did back in the day.

This offering is very basic and makes a great smooth sipping whisky or low proof mixer. On the nose there is vanilla, brown sugar, honey, rye spice, and a smidge of citrus. Being low proof there is very little burn. Being a high rye whiskey, the rye spices hit first but do not linger for very long. The sugars are secondary but do coat the palate. The sugars linger longer than the rye spices with a nice hit of burnt brown sugar and vanilla sitting on the teeth. At a higher proof point this product would be super good. Verdict: Nose: 2.5/5 Taste: 3.5/5 Overall: 3/5 Repurchase: Yes Type: Daily Drinker/Mixer

On the nose I'm not really getting any sweetness, but more of a latexy scent to it -like how it would smell when you're trying to blow up a rubber balloon or like when you put on those doctor exam gloves. Right away with the sip too the mouthfeel is a bit watery to me, I like a little more volume than this to my sip. I may be way off with this but it almost has a kind of bland vegetable taste to it to me - probably due to the lack of really any resemblance of sweetness, but I am getting a hint of a peppery or baking spice taste it that gives it a little more character.

Ive been up and down with this one as I went through the bottle but have come to conclusion. Its not a total gimmick bottle like I anticipated. That said its not whiskey Im gonna dissect with all kind of notes. What it is happens to be is young mgp with a splash of Stranahan malt. Drinkable though at times the youth flashes some green bitterness but overall a tasty enough endeavor at mid$20s that its worth a shot to see if it hits you right. Im not interested in another bottle too many better bourbons in the range but it doesnt suck.......75/100

Spirited Away 3.5

I kept forgetting to check this is in from my South Carolina trip. Saw this at a seafood restaurant I visited and decided to give it a shot. I always see them on store shelves, but never pulled the trigger. Not a bad pour. Not much going on nose wise. Maybe some grain. The palate on the other hand had a decent amount of rye spice present. Slight fruit sweetness. The finish was kind of short and pretty dry. Not terrible, just a little underwhelming is all.

First detection on the nose is honey sweetness and oak. I’m getting some spice. Cinnamon and maybe nutmeg. Apple pie is close at hand. The first sip takes me quickly to the wood and I wonder if I might have missed some initial flavor. But no. I think it’s mostly wood until it begins to finish. I pick up some heat and more of the spices from the aroma. But the apple pie is just a memory now. Vanilla, oak, and some heat hold off to the very end.

Quick Summary: I was quite surprised by the overall well-balanced approach here. The rye is a little lighter than I traditionally like, but it works. Nose: Charred oak barrel with fruity notes. Some vanilla hiding in there. Palate: Starts with the oak and cherries. Some citrus and light rye notes. Finish: Spicy and grainy. Doesn’t linger, but it’s really pleasant. Sets up the next sip well. Enjoy: Anytime.
