Nose: Earthy, malty vegetal and fruit. Palate: Mild pepper and hot capsicum arrival developing into full-bodied vegetal flavours. The texture is oily and slick. Finish: Short. Peppery mulch. The nose is all on rotting fruit and vegetables with a greasy quality, which is typical for a lot of barley new-make spirit. The palate also has this vegetal quality and it makes for a hefty profile that is enjoyable once you acquire the taste, but can be off-putting for novices. You seldom find a delicate new-make that is immediately approachable. However there are no feinty cardboard or off-notes from the cut, and this is a well made, clean spirit. I enjoyed it with a good splash of water, and even more with fruit juice and ice, but for me new-make is something you explore for education rather than enjoyment. Well, unless you are a hard-core fan of moonshine. Very hard to rate, but I’m scoring it on the good side of average. Tasted at Uile-bheist Distillery, 5th April 2015 “Average” : 79/100 (2.75 stars)
