History

Like the gun it is named after, this small cocktail packs a punch. MacElhone calls for a couple of dashes of absinthe in place of the lemon juice used in earlier Soixante-Quinze (Seventy-Five) recipes, ensuring a dry, spirituous drink.

This cocktail is adapted from a recipe found in Harry MacElhone's 1926 book, Harry ABC of Mixing Cocktails. The " 75 " Cocktail is made with 1 teaspoon Grenadine, 2 dashes of Absinthe or Anis-del-Oso, 2/3 Calvados, and 1/3 Gin. It should be shaken well and strained into a cocktail glass. According to the book, this cocktail was quite popular in France during the war and was named after the French light field gin.
