History

Characterful, well-aged rums are blended with citrus and essential pimento dram. Rums can be swapped, but pimento dram is irreplaceable.

Jeff "Beachbum" Berry developed this drink in 1994 in Los Angeles, USA. It appeared in his 1998 book, Grog Log, and later in the 2010 publication Beachbum Berry Remixed. The original formulation by Jeff Berry specified 30ml of Demerara rum and 30ml of dark Jamaican rum, along with white grapefruit juice. According to Jeff Berry, he created The Ancient Mariner as an early "attempt to re-create the flavour of our favourite Trader Vic's drink, Vic's version of the Navy Grog – which, in turn, used Don The Beachcomber's even earlier version as a starting point..." He further explained the name choice: "We called it the Ancient Mariner because by the time we finished with it, that's how we felt."
