The Ante is featured in Harry Craddock's 1930 book, The Savoy Cocktail Book. The original recipe from the book is: ANTE COCKTAIL. 1 Dash Angostura Bitters. ¼ Hercules. ¼ Cointreau. ½ Calvados or Apple Brandy. Shake well and strain into cocktail glass. The Savoy recipe specified Hercules, a product that has long since been discontinued. Vintage newspaper advertisements describe Hercules as a "Maté-Wine Apéritif" with an "alcohol strength over 25°." The updated recipe, revised in August 2020, uses Dubonnet Red in place of Hercules, based on a version found in 2006 on DrinkBoy.com.
