History

This "Martini" is deliberately bold and playful, featuring bright green apple liqueur as its central flavour.

The creation date and creator of this altern'atini are known and widely reported. Loren "Lola" Dunsworth, who owned Lola's in West Hollywood, was encouraged by a Ketel One Vodka representative on the Fourth of July 1996 to add a Ketel One signature Martini to her restaurant's cocktail list. Lola's, which featured one of L.A.'s earliest extensive Martini menus, opened in July 1996 at 945 N. Fairfax Avenue in West Hollywood and closed on 8th August 2013. Bartender Adam Karston was asked by Lola to create a cocktail using Ketel One and a bottle of DeKuyper Pucker Sour Apple Liqueur he saw on the back bar. He combined equal parts Ketel One and Pucker liqueur with a dash of house-made sweet-and-sour mix. The "Adam's Apple Martini," as it was first known, was an immediate success. It later became known by the simpler name "Appletini" and achieved widespread popularity throughout North America in the Noughties, securing its status as a contemporary classic and earning a place in our Cocktail Hall of Fame. At Lola's, the Appletinis were garnished with slices of Granny Smith apple that had been marinated in iced lemon juice mixed with water to maintain their freshness. Other bars opted for maraschino cherries, which provided an attractive color contrast and were easy to add to the drink, making this the more common garnish. In recent years, a dehydrated apple slice has become a popular garnish.
