History
The classic 50:50 proportions can be too rich for this winter warmer; hence the 1:2 ratio employed.
Burnley Miner's Club in North West England reportedly holds the distinction of being the world's largest single account for Bénédictine sales, with its approximately 700 members consuming about 48 bottles weekly. This significant consumption of the liqueur dates back to the period after the First World War. Members of the 11th battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment, having survived the Somme, were stationed in Normandy. There, they discovered Bénédictine D.O.M., which they consumed as a grog mixed with hot water. This drink became known as a 'Benny and Hot' and gained popularity among the troops, who brought it back to Lancashire towns like Accrington and Burnley. At Burnley Miner's Club, the Benny & Hot is prepared with a 50/50 ratio of Bénédictine D.O.M. liqueur and hot water, finished with a squeeze of lemon juice.
