History

Cognac is sweeter and often lower in alcohol than rye whiskey or bourbon, suiting a 'Perfect' Manhattan.

The Manhattan cocktail is said to have been invented in 1874 at the Manhattan Club in New York City. The club's owner, Frank Kammayer, hosted a banquet for presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden. Dr. Iain MacLahlan is credited with creating the drink for the event. However, this account is disputed by some, including the granddaughter of Jennie Jerome, who claimed her mother invented it at the same club. She stated, "My mother was the life of the party, and when she proposed a toast to the presidential candidate, she ordered a drink named after the club." The earliest confirmed written record of the cocktail appears in the November 19, 1882, edition of The New York Daily News. The cocktail was mentioned as a popular drink served at the Manhattan Club.
