Ingredients

1/12 oz Red bitter liqueur
1 1/2 oz Rye whiskey 50% abv
1/2 oz Maraschino liqueur
1/2 oz Dry vermouth
1/4 oz Amaro (e.g. Meletti)
2 dash Orange bitters

How to make

Serve in a nick & nora glass

Prepare

  1. 1 Select and pre-chill a NICK & NORA GLASS.
  2. 2 Prepare garnish of lemon zest twist.

Method

  1. 3 POUR red bitter liqueur into chilled/frozen glass and turn to coat inside of glass.
  2. 4 Discard excess and set glass aside.
  3. 5 STIR other ingredients with ice.
  4. 6 FINE STRAIN into red bitter liqueur-rinsed glass.

Garnish

  1. 7 EXPRESS lemon zest twist over the cocktail and use as garnish.

History

Bittersweet with rye whiskey's spice, this is an aperitivo for when the pre-dinner drink needs a sharpener.

This recipe is adapted from one created around 2011 by Maxwell Britten at Jack the Horse Tavern in Brooklyn Heights, New York City, USA. The original specified Luxardo Amaro Abano, a liqueur which, at the time of writing, is not available in the UK.
