History
When prepared according to Lucas Bols' original specification – 1 shot Bols Genever, 1 shot Bols Butterscotch liqueur, and ¾ shot sweet vermouth – this drink offers a pleasant flavor but lacks intensity. The adjusted formula emphasizes genever, with equal parts butterscotch liqueur and sweet vermouth. Using an oude genever instead of a jonge genever further enhances the butterscotch notes. WARNING: Buttercup flowers are poisonous and should not be used as a garnish. They are also toxic to livestock, but their acrid taste and the oral irritation they cause typically deter consumption. The toxins degrade when the plant is dried, making hay containing dried buttercups safe for animals.
This is an adaptation of a recipe discovered in January 2014 at The House of Bols in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
