History
Refreshing and dry, yet lacks a certain spark.
The Cape Codder, essentially a vodka cranberry with a touch of lime, is named after the Cape Cod resort in Massachusetts. This region was a point of early European settlement in the US, where cranberries, native to North America, were discovered. The juice of these berries is combined with vodka and lime for this drink. This same ingredient combination was previously known as the "Red Devil," a name that fell out of favor shortly after the emergence of the Cape Codder. The Cape Codder rapidly gained popularity, reaching its peak in the early 1980s. A similar drink, the "Rangoon Ruby," is included in Victor Bergeron's 1972 Trader Vic's Bartender's Guide as one of his own creations. RANGOON RUBY ½ lime 1½ ounces cranberry juice 2 ounces vodka Club soda Squeeze lime juice over ice cubes in a 12-ounce sling glass; save shell. Add cranberry juice and vodka. Fill glass with soda. Stir gently. Decorate with spent lime shell, fresh mint, and fruit stick.
