History

Christoph Henkel, at Shepheard Bar in Cologne, Germany, created the original version of this drink. His recipe was the winner of the German Bacardí Legacy 2017 Final. The components were: 60 ml Bacardí Gran Reserva 8 Años rum 20 ml Blackcurrant syrup 10 ml Vinegar aceto balsamico 1 pinch Grated liquorice 1 pinch Salt Henkel stated that the inspiration for his drink came from the concept of a more relaxed lifestyle, emphasizing genuine social connections over online interactions. He felt that "Chapeau is a drink that does justice to any occasion and bring people from all walks of life together." He also mentioned his appreciation for simplicity in beverages, drawing inspiration from the fundamental elements of a Daiquiri: spirit, sourness, and sweetness. Henkel expressed his aspiration for his creation, "Chapeau," to become a future classic. He highlighted Bacardí Gran Reserva 8 Años rum as the core ingredient, providing "Chapeau" with its rich flavor profile. The inclusion of blackcurrant syrup was intended to complement the rum's smoothness and enhance its fruity notes, while balsamic vinegar was chosen to introduce a mild tartness that would balance the syrup's sweetness. The addition of grated liquorice and salt, he explained, was to provide a distinctive zing that would make "Chapeau" memorable.
