History

A Daiquiri No. 1 with grapefruit tang and a maraschino hint. Essentially a Hemingway Special (Papa Doble) for those with less tolerance for sourness. The original is blended frappe style, not on the rocks.

Constantino "Constante" Ribalaïgua Vert is believed to have originated this drink at El Floridita in Havana, Cuba, around 1915. He took ownership of the establishment from his employer in 1918 and managed it until his passing in 1952. If this cocktail indeed dates back to 1915, it predates the Hemingway Daiquiri, as Hemingway did not arrive in Cuba until 1928. This drink is listed as the third of four numbered daiquiris in the 1934 first edition of Bar La Florida Cocktails, a menu book. It is presented there with the subtitle "Maidique Style." Cocktail historian David Wondrich explains on spiritsandcocktails.community/ that this likely refers to "Modesto Maidique was a "colorful" Cuban Senator of the late 1920s who liked to challenge those he argued with to rapier duels. In 1931, he shot the former Secretary of the Interior to death in a shoot-on-sight pistol duel. He was released from prison in a general amnesty in 1933. He was certainly the first person any Cuban of the early 1930s would have thought of if they saw the name Maidique." Daiquiri Num. 3 (Maidique Style) 2 Ounces Bacardí Rum. 1 Teaspoonful Sugar. 1 Teaspoonful Grape Fruit Juice. 1 Teaspoonful Maraschino. Juice of half a Lemon. Cracked ice. Shake well and strain into cocktail glass. Serve frappe.
