History

Crisp, light, and refreshing, this cocktail offers delicate simplicity with a perfectly balanced complexity of flavors. For an enhanced Daiquiri experience, consider substituting sugar syrup with two slightly heaped 5ml measuring spoons of powdered sugar. If a touch more tartness is desired, level the sugar off the spoon. The more sweetness preferred, the more heaped the spoons should be (the author favors slightly raised over flat). To ensure complete sugar dissolution, stir all ingredients in the shaker's base before adding ice and shaking. To prepare a larger serving in a coupe glass, scale the recipe as follows: 75 ml (2½ oz) Light white rum 22.5 ml (¾ oz) Lime juice 15 ml (½ oz) Sugar syrup 10 ml (⅓ oz) Chilled water (omit if using wet ice)

This version uses a rum-heavy 10 parts rum to 3 parts lime to 2 parts sugar formula, ideal for a straightforward Daiquiri with a dry, light white rum. For a more full-bodied rum, a 6:2:1 Daiquiri recipe is recommended, which pairs better with "golden" rums. As the original Daiquiri, it is known as Daiquiri No. 1 and also as a "Natural Daiquiri" in Cuba, signifying it is shaken, not blended. This is the first of four numbered daiquiris featured in the 1934 1st edition of Bar La Florida Cocktails, a menu book from Havana, Cuba's renowned El Floridita Bar. Daiquiri Num. 1 2 Ounces Bacardí Rum. 1 Teaspoonful Sugar. Juice of half a lemon. Cracked ice. Shake well and strain into cocktail glass.
