History
Lighter and arguably more satisfying than citrus-heavy Doctor Cocktail recipes. The choice of rum and Swedish punch will greatly influence the result.
While earlier 'Doctor' recipes combined Swedish punch and rum, this particular recipe, first published in Frank Meier's 1936 Artistry of Mixing Drinks, has become the most enduring. Its popularity was further boosted by its republication in Victor Bergeron's 1947 Bartender's Guide, known as Trader Vic's. The recipe, simply titled DOCTOR, is made in a shaker with a teaspoon each of Lemon and Orange juice, half Swedish Punch, and half Bacardi, shaken well and served. The DOCTOR COCKTAIL recipe specifies 1½ oz. Swedish Punch, ¾ oz. Jamaica rum, 1 tsp. lemon juice, and 1 tsp. orange juice, shaken well with cracked ice and strained into a chilled cocktail glass. Variations suggest substituting the juice of ½ lime for the lemon and orange juice, and using equal parts rum and Swedish punch.
