History

Balanced bitter-sweetness with tequila, mezcal, cherry, and aperitivo liqueurs, plus lemon.

The Eclipse cocktail, a rusty-orange-red drink, was named after the color of the moon during an eclipse. According to Jim Meehan & Chris Gall's 2011 The PDT Cocktail Book, "Leo Robitschek, New York, Winter 2009" created the Eclipse. The recipe calls for 2 oz. El Tesoro Añejo Tequila, .75 oz. Aperol, .75 oz. Cherry – Heering, and .75 oz. Lemon Juice. It is to be shaken with ice and strained into a Del Maguey Vida Mezcal-rinsed coupe, garnished with a lemon twist, as stated by Leo Robitschek, New York, Winter 2009. It is unknown when or where this cocktail changed from being served in a mezcal-rinsed coupe to being served on-the-rock with a mezcal float, but some say it was first served at the 2013 Great GoogaMooga Festival held at Prospect Park, Brooklyn, New York, USA.
