History

Wash your olive to avoid surface contamination by oil/brine. Sloe gin and dry gin pair well, but stop sipping at the grenadine base. Don't waste the olive.

Harry Craddock developed this drink in 1927 to mark the total solar eclipse visible in England that year. Its first printed appearance was in his 1930 publication, The Savoy Cocktail Book. ECLIPSE COCKTAIL. 1/3 Dry Gin. 2/3 Sloe Gin. Fill a cocktail glass with enough Grenadine to coat a ripe olive. Combine the gins and carefully pour them over the grenadine, ensuring they remain unmixed. Finish by expressing orange peel over the surface. This drink is also listed in R. de Fleury's 1934 work, 1700 Cocktails for the Man Behind the Bar. ECLIPSE No. 1 Combine ⅓ Coates Plymouth Gin with ⅔ Sloe Gin. Pour this mixture into a glass containing a ripe olive submerged in Grenadine. It is important that these do not combine. Squeeze a piece of Orange Peel over the top before serving.
