History

Elderflower replaces sweet vermouth in a floral Manhattan variation.

The Manhattan cocktail is believed to have been invented in the 1870s at the Manhattan Club in New York City. Its creation is often attributed to a bartender named Black who was working there at the time. The story goes that the drink was created for a banquet held in honor of presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden. The exact date of this banquet is not clear, but it is thought to have been around 1876. The Manhattan Club was a prestigious establishment, and the drink quickly gained popularity among its patrons. From there, it spread to other bars and eventually became one of the most well-known cocktails in the world. The original recipe called for rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters, a combination that remains the standard for this classic drink.
