History
While Craddock calls for shaking, stirring seems more appropriate. The classic Dry Martini ratio of 5:1 has been mixed.
Harry Craddock's 1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book includes this entry for the Elk Cocktail. "ELK COCKTAIL. ½ Prunelle Brandy. 2 Dashes French Vermouth. ½ Dry Gin. Shake well and strain into cocktail glass." Further research into the Martini cocktail and its evolution may prove illuminating.
