How to make
Serve in a old-fashioned glass
- 1 BEWARE, shaking with fizzy ingredients such as cider tends to be explosive
- 2 Hence, use a still/less fizzy cider and hold both ends of your shaker firmly
- 3 (If you have to hand, use a specially designed 'fizz' shaker such as Perlini, which is designed to be carbonated)
- 4 SHAKE all ingredients with ice and strain into glass (without ice)
- 5 Be sure to shake well to completely emulsify the egg.
History
The addition of a whole raw egg provides body to this satisfying, flavourful, wintry, and delicate cocktail. Retained CO2 from the cider adds necessary body and balancing acidity, requiring a specialised shaker.
Dale DeGroff provided this recipe in December 2012, noting it was "A personal favourite, adapted from a recipe from Jerry Thomas' 1862 How to Mix Drinks: a totally different take on eggnog – made as a single-serve drink it includes a raw egg, so you need to shake the hell out of it." The cocktail is named after General William Henry Harrison, who served the shortest term as an American president. Elected on 4th March 1841, he died one month later from pneumonia. Harrison was known for his drinking, with cider being a preferred beverage. It is said that this eggnog was his favorite drink.
