History
Light and refreshing, like alcoholic real lemonade (not fizzy).
Limmer's Hotel in London was particularly renowned for a specific cocktail. Captain Gronow recounted in his memoirs from the 1860s that the establishment, though described as filthy and seedy, was among the premier sporting venues of 1814, partly because of its 'famous gin-punch'. Later in the 19th century, a bartender named John Collins was employed there, achieving enough recognition to be the subject of a limerick. Consequently, many hold the view that he originated the Collins cocktail, given its resemblance to gin punch. The limerick reads: "My name is John Collins, headwaiter at Limmer's, Corner of Conduit Street, Hanover Square, My chief occupation is filling brimmers For all the young gentlemen frequenters there. Mr. Frank always drinks my gin punch when he smokes."
