History

Although it obscures the sunrise effect, this drink is less tart if the syrup at the bottom is stirred in or, preferably, shaken with the other ingredients.

This classic cocktail originated in September 1930, conceived by Tom Buttery at the Berkeley Hotel in London. Its first known publication was in William J. "Billy" Tarling's 1937 Café Royal Bar Book. While numerous variations of the Golden Dawn now exist, with David Embury's The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks featuring three distinct versions, the provided recipe is preferred. The recipe, credited to the late T. Buttery, is as follows: GOLDEN DAWN Invented by the late T. Buttery ¼ Orange Juice. ¼ Apricot Brandy. ¼ Calvados (Trou Normand). ¼ Gin (Booth's Dry). A dash of Grenadine to be added after the cocktail is poured out.
