History

A pineapple and coconut drink based on yoghurt and rum; a powerful blender may leave pineapple fragments.

The Piña Colada's story begins in Puerto Rico. There is some debate about its exact origins, with multiple people claiming to have invented it. One popular account credits Ramón "Monchito" Marrero, a bartender at the Beachcomber Bar in San Juan, with its creation in 1963. He is said to have been experimenting with the flavors of coconut, pineapple, and rum to create a new signature drink for his establishment. Another claim comes from Roberto Cofresi, a bartender at the Barrachina restaurant, who reportedly served a similar drink, made with pineapple and coconut milk, as early as 1954. The drink was eventually named the Piña Colada, which translates to "strained pineapple."
