Ingredients

1 1/2 oz Gin
3 oz Coconut water
1/6 oz Lime juice
2 dash Aromatic bitters

How to make

Serve in a collins glass

Prepare

  1. 1 Select and pre-chill a COLLINS GLASS.
  2. 2 Prepare garnish of lime wedge.

Method

  1. 3 SHAKE all ingredients with ice.
  2. 4 STRAIN into ice-filled glass.

  1. 5 Garnish with lime wedge.

History

To suit Ernest Hemingway's avoidance of sugar due to his health, this creation is subtly softened and mellowed. It remains dry and strong, but is better balanced.

The Green Isaac's Special, named for the Bahamian island of Great Isaac Cay, is featured in Ernest Hemingway's autobiographical novel Islands in the Stream. In the book, the character Thomas Hudson tastes the drink and experiences its flavors: "Thomas Hudson tasted, took a swallow and felt the cold that had the sharpness of the lime, the aromatic varnishy taste of the Angostura and the gin stiffening the lightness of the ice-cold coconut water."
