History
A clean Daiquiri with delicate notes of maraschino and anise.
The exact beginnings of this cocktail are not documented, but its name honors the Swedish actress and Hollywood icon, Greta Garbo. Born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson on September 18, 1905, Garbo earned three Best Actress Academy Award nominations and received an honorary award in 1954. In 1999, the American Film Institute placed her fifth among the greatest female stars in history, following Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Audrey Hepburn, and Ingrid Bergman. Garbo's cinematic journey began with the 1924 Swedish production, The Saga of Gosta Berling. Despite a supporting role, her portrayal attracted the notice of Louis B. Mayer, the head of Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM), who secured her contract in 1925. The following year, she featured in MGM's silent movie, Torrent, followed by Flesh and the Devil in 1926, a role that established her as an international star. Garbo's transition to sound films occurred with Anna Christie in 1930, a movie famously advertised by MGM with the slogan, "Garbo talks!". Following the disappointing reception of Two-Faced Woman in 1941, Garbo concluded her film career at 35, having appeared in 28 movies. A keen collector of art, she remained unmarried, childless, and lived a private life away from the public eye. Greta Garbo passed away on April 15, 1990.
