History

A spirit-forward Old Fashioned riff, with rye whiskey spice and calvados appley notes; consider adding sugar.

The Old-Fashioned is a cocktail with a history stretching back to the late 19th century, possibly earlier. Its name and form are linked to a period when cocktails were generally made with a spirit, sugar, water, and bitters. David Wondrich, in his book Imbibe!, traces the genesis of the Old-Fashioned to the Pendennis Club in Louisville, Kentucky, around 1880, though he notes that the recipe itself, as we understand it today, was already in existence by then. Alternatively, Jerry Thomas's 1862 Bartenders Guide includes a recipe for a cocktail that is considered a precursor. He describes a drink made with 2 oz of Old-Fashioned Whiskey, half a teaspoon of sugar, 2 dashes of Angostura bitters, and a splash of water, served with a lemon peel. This suggests the drink's lineage predates the Pendennis Club story. The term 'Old-Fashioned' itself became popular around the turn of the 20th century, a time when cocktail recipes were evolving rapidly. The drink experienced a resurgence in popularity in the early 2000s, cementing its status as a classic.
