History
Stir well and strain into an icy glass for a subtly flavoured whiskey cocktail, perfect to conclude an evening.
This cocktail is adapted from Harry Johnson's 1900 Bartenders' Manual. IRISH COCKTAIL. In a large bar glass, combine the following ingredients: Fill up a glass with shaved ice; 2 or 3 dashes of absinthe; 1 dash of maraschino; 1 dash of curaçoa; 2 dashes of bitters (Boker's genuine only); 1 wineglassful of Irish whiskey; Stir well with a spoon, then strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a medium-sized olive and a squeeze of lemon peel on top before serving. The Irish Cocktail is also documented in: - Harry MacElhone's 1927 Barflies and Cocktails, where it is garnished with a "medium-sized olive and squeeze lemon peel on top". - Harry Craddock's 1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book, which specifies a garnish of an "olive and squeeze orange peel on top". - Patrick Gavin Duffy's 1934 Official Mixer's Manual, also featuring an "olive and squeeze orange peel on top" as the garnish.
