History

A cooling combination of four white spirits, triple sec, lemon, and lime, topped with a splash of cola.

This cocktail reached its peak popularity in the early 1980s. By 1985, The New York Times reported, "A potent alcoholic drink called Long Island Iced Tea is sweeping the Island's bars as well as watering spots across the country." Among the many origin stories, one of the most credible places its creation in the 1970s, possibly 1972, by Robert "Rosebud" Butt at Oak Beach Inn in Babylon, New York. The area is known as Long Island, and the drink's resemblance to iced tea has led some to claim its origins date back to Prohibition, due to its disguised alcoholic content.
