History

A vintage French twist on a Negroni, improved by serving on ice.

A Negroni variation from France, this cocktail is arguably superior and more palatable when served over ice. The drink is named for Lucien Gaudin, a French fencer who won gold medals with two different disciplines at the 1924 Olympics in Paris and the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam. Gaudin transitioned to journalism after his athletic career, co-owning Les Films Sportifs, a media company that produced the film coverage of the 1924 Olympics, now recognized as "the real Chariots of Fire Olympics." Unfortunately, the company's financial struggles led to Gaudin's suicide in 1934 following its bankruptcy. This cocktail, which received the Honorary Cup at the Professional Bartenders Championship in Paris on February 2, 1929, is first documented in the 1929 publication Cocktails de Paris Présentes. The recipe is attributed to Charlie of Le Cheval Pie (The Black And White Horse), a Parisian establishment operating from 1925 to 1930, where Gaudin was reportedly a regular.
