History

The Luigi Cocktail, a variation of the Bronx, is first documented in Robert Vermeire's 1922 publication, Cocktails: How to Mix Them. The recipe provided is as follows: Luigi Cocktail. Fill the shaker half full of broken ice and add: 1 teaspoonful of Grenadine. 1 little dash of Cointreau. The juice of half a tangerine. 1/4 gill of Gin. 1/4 gill of French Vermouth Shake well and strain into a cocktail-glass. This drink was created by Mr. Luigi Naintré, who owned the Embassy Club and previously gained renown at establishments such as Romano's, Ciro's, and the Criterion. He is recognized as a prominent restaurateur globally, attracting a substantial and loyal clientele wherever his career took him. The Luigi Cocktail is noted as being exceptionally popular in London. Subsequent appearances of this cocktail's recipe can be found in Jimmy Late's 1930 book, Cocktails by Jimmy Late Of Ciro's London, Harry Craddock's 1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book, Odell's Book of Cocktails and Fancy Drinks from 1933, and the U.K.B.G.'s Approved Cocktails in 1937. The version used here is adapted from Stanley M. Jones' 1977 work, Jones' Complete Barguide.
