Pronounced 'May-Sawn Sharl,' this drink's recipe originates from David A. Embury's 1948 book, The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks. The original recipe lists: MAISON CHARLES Pronounced may-sawn' sharl 1 part Sugar Syrup 2 parts Lime Juice 8 parts White Cuban Rum Fresh Mint To prepare, gently crush a few sprigs of mint in a bar glass, cover with rum, and allow it to infuse for 15 to 30 minutes. Combine this infused rum with the lime juice and sugar syrup in a shaker. Shake well with finely crushed ice. For the garnish, finely chop a few mint leaves, ensuring not to include the stems. This can be achieved with a sharp paring knife or a parsley cutter. Mix a small amount of this finely chopped mint with powdered sugar to rim the cocktail glasses. Chill the glasses, strain the cocktail into them, and finish with a very small amount of the chopped mint sprinkled on top. The MADISON AVENUE is prepared identically to the Maison Charles, with the substitution of Cointreau for the sugar syrup. This cocktail may be named after the Maison Charles company. Founded in Paris in 1908, Maison Charles was renowned for its lamps and other high-end home furnishings. During the 1940s and 1950s, the company was highly acclaimed for its "Charles style," a blend of classicism and modernity.
